  • Week 2 Football Quick Takes

Thursday Calexico (1-0) at Castle Park (0-1) (at Otay) - In a crazy two day game Calexico came up with a big stop in week one, if their defense can maintain that level they should be able to control the tempo. Castle Park needs to get Ladell Hampton the ball as much as possible. Calipatria (0-1) at Desert Mirage (0-1) Time to wake up the offense for Calipatria. San Diego (0-1) at Westview (0-1) - Football did football and the Cavers left week 1 with a loss but showed upside on both sides of the ball. Westview has a tough schedule and needs to just move a little in the right direction every week to still be a playoff threat. Otay Ranch (0-1) Helix (1-0) - Helix looked solid in week 1, Ryland Jessee threw for 4 TDs and looks to have made progression in the offseason so look for more passing in Week 2. Otay has to find a way to get some pressure and get Jessee on the run. Friday Fallbrook (0-1) at Santa Fe Christian (1-0) - Fallbrook took a tough loss in week 1 but showed that they have what it takes to hang with one of their divisions best teams in UC so they should be able to make this one very close. SFC had some youth come out the gate strong in week 1 including sophomore QB Andrew Hindy excited to see if they can sustain this production. Mount Miguel (1-0) at Chula Vista (0-1) - The Matadores had one of the statement wins of the week last week, my eyes are on the defense to see what they do to try and limit Chula. For the Spartans week 1 was a tough loss that they kept close to a Country Day team that some have as a division favorite and they were able to hang with them. Tri-City Christian (0-1) San Ysidro (0-1) - This is an early borderline 'must win' for both teams as they each look to prove they are for real this year. Eyes on Angel Garcia from San Ysidro, if he goes for anything close to 160 yards again then I think San Ysidro can win. Coronado (1-0) at Sweewater (0-1) - Week 1 the Coronado Islanders showed they have the tools this year to get it done in crucial parts of the game, expect more of Elias Valdivia all over the field in Week 2. For Sweetwater it's time to establish the run game. Southwest SD (1-0) at Mountain Empire (1-0) - Tons of hype for Southwest SD as they opened the season with an upset win, Clairemont (0-1) at Army-Navy (1-0) - Pressure builds each week for Clairemont. For Army-Navy they need to duplicate week 1 numbers and get in a rhythm. Centennial (1-0) at Cathedral Catholic (1-0) - This might be the toughest game of the year for the Dons. Lincoln (1-0) at Alemany (0-1) - The Hornets continue to play non section opponents, week 1 was a close to perfectly played game. Carlsbad at Mater Dei Catholic (0-1) - Julian Sayin should be fun to wathc on every snap this year as he finds a new group of playmakers. Mater Dei showed serious talent on Saturday, if they can reduce the penalties they are tough out. O'Farrell (0-1) at Escondido Charter (1-0) - O'Farrell has youth that is still goring in to their varsity selves but watch for the offense to get better every week. Escondido Charter played well on both sides of the ball of Friday. Escondido (0-1) at Orange Glen (0-1) - Both had tough week 1 opponents so this will be closer matchup, look for Orange Glen RB Austin Martin to be a playmaker to watch. Mount Carmel (0-1) at Patrick Henry vs Season opener for the Patriots, we've talked about their defense all offseason and now its time to see. Mount Carmel showed the base pieces are there and will benefit from already having played a game. Francis Parker (1-0) at Meadows (1-0) - Chris Williams went off to the tune of 6 scores in Week 1 so expect to see more of him until otherwise needed. Monte Vista (1-0) - Kearny (1-0) - Winner of this one is in really good shape this season , Kearny has a potentially flashy and successful passing game. Steele Canyon (1-0) at Madison (1-0) - Major Givens for Steele Canyon will need to have one of his best games ever. Based off of Week 1 Madison is the real deal. El Capitan (1-0) at Hilltop (1-0) - The Vaqueros went pass heavy week one and Hilltop ran the ball well, so expect both trends to continue and this one to be a bit of a shootout. Vista (0-1) at La Costa Canyon (0-1) - Both teams played tough non section opponents in Week 1 and are looking to bounce back with a W. La Jolla Country Day (1-0) at Crawford (1-0) - La Jolla Country Day threw the ball well as expected and has a dual threat QB. Crawford beat Mar Vista in an impressive way and seems to have offense figured out. La Jolla (0-1) at Scripps Ranch (0-1) - La Jolla looks to clean up some execution errors in Week 2. Scripps Ranch will need to rely on a new QB. Santana (0-1) - Montgomery (0-1) - Big gut check week for both teams that came in to the season with high expectations. Morse (1-0) at Rancho Buena Vista (1-0) - Battle of big run games, so this game shouldn't take very long, Im guessing this will come down to which defense can come up with a big play. Saint Augustine (0-1) at Oceanside (0-1) - Both these teams are still looking for their identity this season, Parker Johnson for Saints is a player to watch. Palo Verde Valley (0-1) at Coachella Valley (1-0) - PVV lost a weird one in Week 1 and are out for blood this week so should the weather allow them to have one full game on the same night then they should be able to have a big night. Poway (1-0) at Eastlake (0-1) - Poway is low key creeping in to the Top 10 conversation and this win could only help. Eastlake played out of section in Week 1 so they get a little leeway in judging that loss for a game or two. Torrey Pines (0-1) at San Clemente (1-0) - How quickly can Torrey Pines get the offense figured out. Olympian (1-0) at San Pasqual (1-0) - Olympian threw the ball well in Week 1 and San Pasqual looked impressive. This will be the toughest game on Olympians schedule this year. Granite HIlls (0-1) at Valhalla (0-1) - This will be a fun game to watch between two teams that should get better every week all season. Hoover (0-1) at El Cajon Valley (0-1) - Hoover lost a heart breaker in Week 1 and El Cajon Valley hung tough with a good Mission Bay. This is an even matchup and could be one of the games of the week. University City (1-0) at Del Norte (1-0) - Sam Cooper looks like he grew as a QB in the offseason and is here to take UC forward. Del Norte came out strong on both sides week 1. Lawndale (0-0) at Mission Hills (1-0) - Mission Hills continues to play non section. Mira Mesa (0-1) at San Marcos (1-0) - Mira Mesa had a hard loss to Helix, it's not a reflection of what this team is fully capable of. San Marcos outta nowhere a little bit to put upa a blowout in Week1, they can throw the ball well. Ramona (1-0) at Rancho Bernardo (0-1) - Ramona remains a scary team to play until otherwise noted. RB got caught a little off guard by San Marcos last week and can come back with a signature win here. Grossmont (0-1) at El Camino (1-0) - Grossmont is a bit of an underdog here, El Camino looked good in week 1 and will get some top 10 votes if they win here. Christian (0-1) at Bishop's (1-0) - Bishop's looks really strong, Christian turned the ball over too much in Week 1 and needs to limit that. Saturday Classical Academy (1-0) at Maranatha Christian - Classical threw up impressive numbers on offense and defense and could be a team to fear this year. Mar Vista (0-1) vs Mission Bay (1-0) - Mar Vista will be hungry for a bounce back win. Mission Bay showed they are capable of significant aerial production.
